Aghagower

Medieval Church

According to tradition St Patrick stopped here on his way to Croagh Patrick. He appointed St Senach, the founder of the church, first Bishop of Aghagower. The 15th century church and 11th century round tower are enclosed in a small graveyard in the centre of the village. Also present are two dried up holy wells and a small sheela-na-gig. I found the sheela very difficult to locate even though I had a good inkling about it's location. It is situated on the enclosing wall of the well on the opposite side of the road to the graveyard. I didn't get any good shots as the light was fading fast and I had planned to call back the next day.

I took some quick shots of the windows and portals, shown below. Hopefully I will get good photos of the sheela-na-gig and the holy wells on my next visit. Aghagower is situated along An Tóchar Phádraig - St Patrick's Way, a pilgrims trail that runs from Ballintubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick.
